Karen Fisher, MS, RD, LDN, CDE

“Food should neither be a necessary evil nor a constant obsession, but nourishment for the body and soul that pleases all five senses and adds joy to our day.”

After working in many healthcare arenas including hospitals, home care, outpatient programs and physician practices, I am pleased and excited to offer my own nutrition consulting firm, Nutrition Connection. I have a passion and commitment to helping my clients achieve their personal best in such areas as managing diabetes, losing weight (with or without surgery), minimizing nutrition side effects during cancer treatment, and improving quality of life through learning to eat in an educated and intuitive fashion. I wholly believe that each of us has the ability to be whatever we aspire to, and it is very rewarding for me to be part of the education and inspiration process that allows people to go to the next level. Over the years, I have gained diverse experience in such areas as program and material development for weight loss programs, bariatric (weight loss) surgery and diabetes classes, speaking to professionals at cancer conferences, pharmacy conventions and nutrition conferences, and reaching out to the community with grocery store tours and talks on topics like heart health, label reading and eating out. I’ve also had the privilege of providing mentoring and direction to nutrition interns with the University of Nevada, Reno, supervising staff of outpatient diabetes and nutrition programs, and representing our local dietitian association as media spokesperson. I have also enjoyed guest lecturing as an adjunct professor at the university, and enjoy submitting article contributions to local newspapers, and for company newsletters and magazines.

I work with people of all ages, from the pediatric population to the geriatric, and tailor food and lifestyle plans suited to the wants, needs and desires of the client. We work together to incorporate favorite foods and everyday eating situations within guidelines that will achieve results without deprivation. My clients and I explore all aspects of food that can impact the success of our plans and ensure any barriers are removed. Gaining a deeper understanding of problem eating habits lends to gaining power over food, and then the ability to eat healthfully with a minimum of effort takes place.

As a team with my client, we will follow with each other to track improvements in weight, body composition, lab values, medical conditions, energy levels and quality of life. We overcome challenges and reach desired results, all the while building the lifelong skills to maintain results. Clients continue to enjoy their meals and snacks, even more so with the feelings of health, well being and confidence nutrition consulting and health coaching offers. Incorporating evidence based eating guidelines along with nutrition coaching makes the time spent a worthwhile and rewarding endeavor.
