Engage Your Mind and Body

Staying motivated throughout isolation has been challenging for all of us, with everyone tackling new challenges and upsets of our daily routines. These stresses, both big and small, can take a serious toll, but adding even a quick workout to your day can relieve stress, boost mood, and help maintain fitness goals. Here are a few of our favorite tips for staying active at home.

Any room is your new home gym.

Even if you don’t own weights or a treadmill, you can get an effective workout at home! No matter the activity level you prefer, there is an at-home workout for you.

  1. Head to YouTube and search your favorite workout to find free, instructor-lead classes, like this kick-boxing series. Other bountiful search queries include yoga, pilates, barre, ZUMBA, and HIIT.
  2. No weights? No problem. Bodyweight workouts can be highly effective, and there are endless exercises you can do with absolutely no equipment. Light weights can also be made with a variety of household objects: use cans or wine bottles for 1- to 2-pound weights (remember, 16 oz equals 1 pound), and jugs of milk or laundry detergent for 8- to 10-pound weights.
  3. Lastly, if traditional workouts aren’t for you, don’t despair. Take a long walk in the warm weather (staying smart regarding social distancing guidelines), go for a bike ride, or do a bit of yard work. Yard work like mowing the lawn or planting flowers can burn as many calories as a brisk walk, so tackle a workout and enjoy the beautiful spring weather all in one.

Getting active not only burns calories, it also releases endorphins, hormones in the brain that promote a sense of well-being. While it may sound like a chore to get moving, just remember the physical and mental benefits you’ll reap when you do.
